Week 52, Entry 3

It is my second week and I am already sick in bed. Ariana (my supervisor) says to ABSOLUTELY NOT come in if any of us feels KIND of sick, so I called in sick. I'm not happy about it, at ALL, but it's what my supervisor said to do, and even if she wasn't my supervisor, she is really nice. I am having trouble breathing steadily, though it doesn't seem like I am particularly congested. I guess that means that I'm going to have to do a COVID test as well.
I am enjoying my job immensely, which is why I wasn't happy about missing work today. Yesterday, I was downstairs cleaning up the children's toys, and I met a mother (Lina) and child (Ben). Ben, about 18 months, was a little anxious about me, but then became more comfortable when I sat down on the floor and spoke gently. As I picked up the magnet blocks (him and another child were "making a house" earlier, but he had wandered off), I made myself, when sitting, shorter than him. I talked about the red roofs here (Lina got involved, too, showing him the red roof outside the windows!) how once upon a time, our city was very poor, but there was a woman who said she would give all her money to the city if we followed a list of rules. Red roofs and white buildings, with red and green awnings, so our city would always be special. She also told them that one of the parks downtown (the one with the duck pond by the zoo) was from that woman, too. He seemed quite engaged with this, as did his mother. It made me feel so happy, because often, children have been afraid of me. I like helping parents and children, even if I don't think I would be very good as a parent
The day before yesterday, I saw a girl (about 6 years old) look around, check that her parents were looking away...and then put her mouth on one of the handrails leading down to the children's section. Her expression was just so happy and determined at once, but I was very grateful that I was off my shift and also not her parent. I couldn't very well go up to her as some random stranger and say what I was thinking, which was WHAT ARE YOU THINKING, NO NO NO NO.
