The Practices teach our values. What lessons and values have you discovered in Reading?

The primary value I have learned in this, helping others, seems like it might be better suited to the Solar, while the 4th rule seems better suited to the Lunar. This was something touched on in all of my texts so far, the way that magic calls us to help others, how it must not be resisted. To resist this call in magic is as painful as to resist the call of magic itself.

Lunar and Solar gather together in my work at the library (service to the community combined with books and learning), and the leadup to that, my first real job, is what has kept me from finishing this in a month. I have missed the cutoff by several days, but I will also say that I have Read through 2 texts and started on a third, which I will indicate as a sign that I am committed to this work.

This is a very short reflection, but I think it is clear and practical -- like the lesson I was given.

1) What is Reading?

In the Fencraft, Reading is not strictly “reading” in the sense of intake of connected words, but “reading” in the academic sense, which is absorbing a given thing within the context of your own opinions and even history.

For us, we primarily use the following forms of media to Read:
Books, video (generally film and television), musical albums, and two-dimensional images.

2) Make a list of keywords associated with the Lunar.
Academic/academy/academia, aesthetic, analyse, art(ist), astrology, astronomy, book, clarify, cold, confess, cry, crystal, diplomacy, experiment, gothic, grimoire, growth, guess, hypothesis, inform(ation), invent(or), involve, journey, know(lege), language, maintain, mental/mind, monk, moon/moony, novel(ist), observe/observation, odd, opinion, outer/outside, other(wise), paint, pale, paper, pen, placement, pool, predict, profess(or), queer, question/query, read(er), risk, ritual, robe, ruin, rune, separation, study/student, temple, theory, undecided, understand, watch(er), withdraw, wonder, worry, write(r).

3) List 3 ways of “Reading” which don’t include a novel

a)  Watching a video
b) Listening to an album
c) Journaling your observations on a piece of media, or drawing something related to it.

4) What are the purpose(s) of Reading?
To improve upon our wider knowledge, and to provide further information to support our practices. With Reading, we try to understand ourselves and our world through doing so.
